Things to Consider

Tipping is not customary in Laos except in up market restaurants where 10% of the bill is appreciated – but only if a service charge hasn’t already been added.

Lao people tend to keep more physical distance from each other than Westerners. You will know you are too close if you see your Lao colleague backing off to a more comfortable distance. However, if comfortable with you, Lao will touch you a lot, especially among women.

Touching someone’s head (or even taking a book from the shelf above someone’s head) should be avoided. If done, an immediate apology should be made.

Before entering a Lao person’s home, you must take off your shoes and leave them outside. Feet are considered low and placing them on furniture or pointing at things or people with them is not acceptable. Lao people usually serve water to guests arriving at their home; it is polite to accept it even if you don’t want to drink (you don’t have to drink it).

In Lao homes, if the host (especially elderly person) sits on the floor you should sit there as well, don’t sit anywhere higher if you want to be seen as a respectful person.

It is OK to wear shoes when walking around a temple compound, but don’t forget to remove them before entering the chapel.
